It describes the various technologies used to generate the highest magnetic fields with resistive, pulsed, and superconducting magnets. The limitations on the generation of high magnetic fields imposed by presently available materials are shown. Finally, the important role national laboratories play as user facilities in helping to link basic and applied research with future industrial applications is explained.
